New Delhi: With temperatures rising sharply across many parts of the country, doctors and health experts are urging people to stay alert for symptoms of heat stroke a serious heat-related medical emergency that can become life-threatening if ignored.

Heat stroke usually occurs when the body overheats due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or physical activity in hot weather. It is considered one of the most severe forms of heat illness.

What Is Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke happens when the body loses its ability to regulate temperature effectively. In severe cases, body temperature can rise above 40 degrees Celsius, affecting the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles.

Medical experts say immediate treatment is important to prevent complications.

Common Symptoms of Heat Stroke

One of the most noticeable signs of heat stroke is an unusually high body temperature. People may also experience hot, dry skin, although excessive sweating can still occur in some situations.

Other common symptoms include:

  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme thirst and dehydration

In more serious cases, heat stroke can lead to confusion, slurred speech, disorientation, fainting or seizures.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Children, elderly individuals and people with existing medical conditions are generally more vulnerable during heatwaves. Outdoor workers, athletes and people spending long hours in direct sunlight are also at higher risk.

Health experts say dehydration and lack of adequate rest can further increase the chances of heat-related illnesses.

How to Respond During Heat Stroke

Doctors advise moving the affected person to a cooler place immediately and lowering body temperature as quickly as possible.

Using cool water, wet cloths, fans or ice packs may help while waiting for medical assistance. Experts also recommend drinking water or oral rehydration fluids if the person is conscious and able to swallow safely.

Prevention Remains Important

Experts suggest avoiding direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, wearing light clothing and drinking enough fluids regularly during extreme heat conditions.

As heatwaves continue in several regions, awareness about early symptoms and timely medical care remains critical for preventing serious health emergencies.
