New Delhi: Residents of the national capital may have to brace for another prolonged spell of extreme temperatures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heatwave conditions across Delhi and neighbouring regions for most of the coming week.

After brief relief due to thunderstorms, dust storms and light rainfall in some parts of the city on Saturday, weather conditions are expected to turn harsh again from Sunday onward.

IMD Issues Heatwave Warning

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to affect parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between May 24 and May 29. Severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist from May 24 to May 27.

The weather department indicated that temperatures may remain significantly above normal, with the heat easing only towards the end of the week.

Temporary Relief From Rain and Thunderstorms

Delhi experienced strong winds, thunderstorms and scattered rainfall on Saturday morning, bringing short-lived relief from the intense heat.

The IMD recorded wind speeds reaching up to 81 kmph at Pusa Road, 56 kmph at Palam and 35 kmph at Pragati Maidan during the dust storm activity.

Visibility at Palam airport also dropped sharply from 3,500 metres to 1,500 metres within an hour due to dust and strong winds. Light rainfall was recorded in isolated parts of the city, including Ridge and Pusa, while other weather stations reported minimal rainfall.

Warm Nights Add to Discomfort

The heatwave has continued to impact Delhi residents even during nighttime hours. Safdarjung, considered the city’s base weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius, which remained above the seasonal average.

Over the past several days, temperatures in many areas of Delhi have crossed the 45-degree Celsius mark, intensifying concerns over public health and heat-related illnesses.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD advised residents to remain indoors during periods of strong winds and extreme heat, especially during afternoon hours when temperatures are expected to peak.

Authorities are also closely monitoring weather conditions as north India continues to witness one of the harshest heat spells of the season.
