Kozhikode: Kerala health authorities have intensified surveillance and containment measures after a suspected case of Nipah virus infection was detected in Kozhikode district. State Health Minister K Muraleedharan confirmed on Thursday that the patient's initial test result had returned positive, while final confirmation from the Virology Institute is still awaited.
The patient was first admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode with a persistent high fever. After his condition failed to improve, he was shifted to another medical facility where doctors suspected Nipah virus infection. According to officials, the patient is currently on ventilator support and remains under close medical observation.

Health officials have launched an extensive contact-tracing exercise to prevent any possible spread of the virus. So far, authorities have identified 77 individuals who came into contact with the patient. These include 58 healthcare workers, 14 family members and five friends.

Officials said none of the identified contacts have developed symptoms so far. However, all of them are being monitored closely and advised to follow precautionary protocols.
The state government has urged residents to remain cautious, especially as the period between May and September is considered a high-risk season for Nipah virus transmission. Authorities have advised people to avoid contact with bats, which are known natural carriers of the virus.
Citizens have also been asked to immediately report any unusual bat activity or sudden illness in their surroundings to health officials.

The Kerala government has activated emergency response measures and strengthened surveillance systems across the region. Health officials said hospitals have been alerted and preventive protocols are being strictly enforced to ensure early detection and containment of any potential cases.
Authorities have appealed to the public not to panic and to follow official health advisories while the final test confirmation is awaited.
