Mumbai: An India-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, Green Asha, arrived at Mumbai port on Thursday carrying 15,400 tonnes of fuel, marking a key development for the country’s energy supply chain.
The vessel docked at the liquid berth operated by BPCL-IOCL at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, according to official statements.
The tanker’s arrival is significant as it successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week, a crucial maritime corridor currently under strain due to geopolitical tensions.

Authorities confirmed that the vessel, its cargo, and crew members remained safe throughout the journey. Port officials described the arrival as a milestone, noting that it is among the first India-bound LPG shipments to reach safely since tensions escalated in the region.
The development comes at a time when global energy markets are facing uncertainty due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.
Iran has claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas shipments, raising concerns about supply disruptions worldwide.
India, which relies heavily on imports for its cooking gas needs, remains particularly vulnerable to such disruptions.
India’s LPG consumption stood at around 33.15 million metric tonnes over the past year. To meet this demand, nearly 60% of the country’s cooking gas requirements are met through imports.

A large share of these imports originates from Middle Eastern suppliers, making uninterrupted maritime routes critical for maintaining supply stability.
In another positive sign, the India-flagged LPG vessel Green Sanvi also successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week, indicating continued movement of essential energy supplies despite regional instability.
Officials said such developments highlight the resilience of maritime logistics in ensuring the steady availability of fuel during uncertain times.
