Demand for a National Commission for Widows' Rights at State and Central Levels
A non-governmental organization from Maharashtra has appealed to the central government to establish an independent National Commission for Widows' Rights to protect the rights of widows. The Mahatma Phule Samaj Seva Mandal stated that widows in India face problems such as social exclusion, denial of property and inheritance rights, economic insecurity, mental stress, and sexual exploitation. The current institutional mechanisms are not adequately addressing these issues.

The organization stated in its petition that despite the guarantee of equality and dignity under Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution, there is no specific law or commission for widows. The national and state-level commissions for women, due to their broad scope, are unable to focus on the issues of widows, leading to a lack of grievance redressal, monitoring, and accountability.
