Colombo: Thirty Indian fishermen were released by Sri Lankan authorities on Tuesday and are currently on their way back home, according to the Indian High Commission in Colombo.

The mission shared the update on X, confirming that the fishermen had been repatriated and their return journey to India is underway.

The detention of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka has been a recurring issue, typically linked to allegations of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in the Palk Bay and Palk Strait. The dispute remains a long-standing concern, with periodic arrests followed by diplomatic efforts leading to their release. Appeals from the Tamil Nadu government and continued engagement by Indian authorities have often helped secure repatriation.

In recent weeks, several such releases have taken place. Fourteen fishermen were sent back to Chennai on March 14 after intervention by the Indian High Commission. Earlier, nine fishermen were repatriated on March 20, and three others on 17 March.

In another case earlier this year, a Sri Lankan court ordered the release of eight fishermen from Rameswaram who had been arrested in January for alleged IMBL violations. However, two others in the same case were sentenced to imprisonment and fined, while seven were held in a special camp awaiting repatriation.

The issue also drew political attention in February when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin urged the Central government to expedite the return of detained fishermen. His appeal included cases involving fishermen from Mandapam and Mayiladuthurai, some of whom were later shifted to detention centres following court orders.

Crossing of the maritime boundary continues to be a sensitive issue in India-Sri Lanka relations. Both countries have repeatedly emphasized the need for a humane approach while working toward long-term solutions, including better boundary management and alternative livelihood options for fishing communities.
