New Delhi: At least 40 passengers were injured after a private Volvo bus collided with a truck and fell off a bridge in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district early Sunday morning. The accident took place around 4 am near Pogururu village in Pamidi mandal on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-44).

According to police, the bus was travelling from Hyderabad towards Bengaluru when it collided with an Eicher truck while crossing the Pogururu bridge. Due to the impact, both vehicles fell off the bridge and were badly damaged.

Passengers trapped inside damaged bus

Several passengers were trapped inside the bus after the crash. Police and rescue teams used heavy machinery to remove the injured people from the wreckage.  A police officer said around 10 passengers are in critical condition and the bus driver was also among those seriously injured. The driver was trapped inside the bus and was rescued after a long operation with the help of an excavator

Injured shifted to hospitals

The injured passengers were first taken to the Pamidi government hospital for treatment. Those with serious injuries were later shifted to the Government Hospital in Anantapur for better medical care. Police teams cleared the accident site and worked to restore traffic movement on the highway.

Probe launched into accident

Police have registered a case under Section 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving. Officials said an investigation is underway to find out the exact reason behind the collision.
