Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, the Punjab Police has arrested fugitive AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who had been absconding for nearly seven months in a rape case registered last year.
Pathanmajra, a first-time MLA from Sanour, was nabbed from Gwalior following a targeted operation codenamed ‘Operation Pathan’. He was subsequently brought back to Patiala for further legal proceedings.

According to police sources, the legislator had been on the run since September, with initial suspicions that he had fled abroad, possibly to Australia. However, a breakthrough came two days ago when investigators received technical inputs regarding the use of a hotel Wi-Fi network in Gwalior.
Further digital analysis revealed that a mobile number linked to the United Kingdom had been accessed on the same network, which was traced back to Pathanmajra. Acting swiftly on these leads, police teams launched an operation and successfully apprehended him.
The arrest comes at a politically sensitive time, with less than a year remaining for the Punjab Assembly elections and the Aam Aadmi Party aiming to maintain its “clean image.”
Police officials stated that further investigation is underway, and the accused will be produced before a court. The case is expected to have significant political ramifications in the state.
