New Delhi: Following a major controversy in Punjab, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has resigned from his post. The matter is linked to the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, an official with the Punjab Warehousing Corporation, who allegedly committed suicide.
A video has surfaced in which Randhawa alleged that Minister Bhullar was pressuring him to award a tender to one of his close associates. He spoke of facing mental harassment; subsequently, reports emerged that he had taken his own life by consuming poison.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the minister's resignation was sought to facilitate an inquiry into the matter and ensure an impartial investigation. He gave assurances that appropriate action would be taken once the investigation were concluded.
Following this incident, opposition parties—Congress, the BJP, and the Akali Dal—have launched a scathing attack on the government.
Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa demanded that a murder case be registered against the minister and called for a CBI inquiry.
BJP leader Sunil Jakhar criticized the government, raising questions regarding the state of law and order.
Akali Dal Chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also asserted that a mere resignation is insufficient and that strict action must be taken against the minister.
The opposition has also questioned why the investigation is being conducted at the state level rather than being handed over to a central agency. They argue that a CBI inquiry is essential to ensure impartiality.
