ACC accepts Amarendu Prakash’s resignation
New Delhi: In a significant development at the country’s largest steel-producing public sector enterprise, the resignation of Amarendu Prakash, Chairman of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has been accepted by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), sources told Dynamite News.
According to highly placed sources, Prakash, who was appointed Chairman on May 31, 2023, had a tenure up to May 2028. However, due to sudden and unspecified circumstances, he resigned ahead of schedule. His last working date is understood to be April 1, 2026.

The development comes at a crucial time for SAIL, which plays a key role in India’s infrastructure expansion, railways, defence production, and major industrial projects. Leadership stability at the helm of the Maharatna PSU is considered strategically important amid fluctuating global steel prices and rising domestic demand.
Sources said the post of Chairman, SAIL, has already been advertised by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). The last date for applications is March 9, 2026, initiating the formal selection process for a full-time incumbent.
As per norms, PESB will conduct interviews and recommend a panel of names to the administrative ministry, which will forward the proposal to the ACC for final approval.
Meanwhile, the Steel Ministry sent a proposal to the ACC for an ad-hoc arrangement to ensure continuity until a regular Chairman is appointed. However, sources indicated that the ACC has raised strong observations and returned the proposal to the ministry for further clarification.

While the exact observations have not been disclosed, insiders suggest the ACC sought additional details on procedural compliance and justification for the interim arrangement. If the matter is not resolved quickly, a senior board member may be given additional charge temporarily.
Given SAIL’s strategic importance and its contribution to national steel output, the leadership transition is being closely watched by industry and policy circles. Dynamite News will continue to track further developments.
