A terrorist was killed during an ongoing counter-terrorism operation in Kishtwar
Kishtwar: A terrorist was killed during an ongoing counter-terrorism operation in Kishtwar district on Sunday after security forces engaged militants in a fierce gunfight, officials said.
The encounter began in the general area of Passerkut in the Chatroo belt around 10:30 am after security forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of suspected militants in the region. Following the information, a joint team of the Army, police and paramilitary forces launched a search operation in the remote forested terrain.

During the operation, security personnel approached a mud house located at the foothills of a hill where the militants were believed to be hiding. As the forces moved closer, the militants opened fire, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire.
Security forces responded immediately, leading to a prolonged encounter in the area. Officials confirmed that one militant has been killed so far in the ongoing operation.
Authorities believe the militants were linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a banned Pakistan-based terror outfit that has been involved in several attacks in the region.
The Chatroo forest belt has witnessed several encounters between militants and security forces in recent weeks. Nearly half a dozen gunfights were reported in the region last month.
Those encounters resulted in the death of a soldier as well as a militant, highlighting the continued presence of armed militants in the dense forest areas of the district.
Security forces have intensified surveillance and counter-terror operations in the region to track down remaining militants and prevent further infiltration. The operation in the Chatroo belt was still underway at the time of the latest reports.
