New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented India as a pillar of economic stability, innovation and growth at a time when the world is witnessing rising trade barriers, geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Addressing the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, PM Modi called upon global businesses to become partners in India’s growth journey through the vision of Make in India, Innovate with India and Scale for the World.
The Prime Minister’s address came during the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India under its 2026 chairship, where leaders, policymakers and business representatives discussed the future roadmap for trade, investment, technology cooperation and sustainable development among emerging economies.
With global economies facing uncertainty due to protectionism, energy challenges and shifting geopolitical alliances, India used the BRICS platform to highlight its expanding economic capabilities and its role as a trusted partner for global businesses.
PM Modi said India is focusing on creating economic bridges at a time when international trade is facing increasing restrictions and barriers. He highlighted India’s growing network of trade partnerships and said the country has entered into free trade agreements with nearly 40 nations since 2014, helping businesses access wider markets.
The Prime Minister said India’s economic approach is based on reducing barriers, improving connectivity and creating investment opportunities across sectors. Under its BRICS presidency theme, Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability, India is promoting cooperation in areas including agriculture, healthcare, skill development, smart grids and emerging technologies.
Highlighting the growing influence of BRICS, PM Modi said the grouping now represents around half of the world’s population, nearly 40 per cent of global GDP and more than one-fourth of global trade.
He underlined that the economic expansion of BRICS countries has outpaced global growth trends, reflecting the increasing role of emerging economies in shaping international economic decisions.
From its initial formation as a four-nation grouping in 2006, BRICS has expanded into a broader partnership involving major developing economies, strengthening its position as a platform for South-South cooperation.
A major focus of PM Modi’s address was expanding business collaboration among BRICS nations. The Prime Minister urged the BRICS Business Council to identify the top 10 trade barriers affecting companies and develop solutions to improve cross-border commerce.
He also proposed supporting around 100 startups every year to expand into BRICS markets and creating 1,000 new business partnerships with regular reviews to measure progress. The initiatives are aimed at increasing collaboration between startups, MSMEs, investors and technology companies across BRICS economies.
PM Modi highlighted India’s efforts to create stronger links between entrepreneurs and global markets through platforms such as the BRICS Incubator Network, BRICS MSME Portal and BRICS Startup Innovation Fund.
These initiatives are designed to provide startups and small businesses with better access to finance, investment opportunities, international markets and skilled talent. The Prime Minister said innovation-driven growth will play a crucial role in shaping the future economic landscape of BRICS nations.
During his address, PM Modi highlighted India’s digital transformation as one of the country’s biggest economic strengths. He pointed to the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has transformed digital transactions and financial inclusion across India.
The Prime Minister also spoke about India’s investments in strategic sectors including semiconductors, quantum technology, biotechnology, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing. Alongside technological growth, India is rapidly expanding infrastructure networks involving highways, railways, ports and airports to support future economic expansion.
PM Modi also raised the importance of maritime security and uninterrupted global shipping routes. He stressed that global trade depends on safe sea lanes, open supply chains and protection of seafarers.
The message comes at a time when geopolitical conflicts and regional tensions have created concerns over shipping routes, energy transportation and global commerce. India has consistently advocated freedom of navigation and secure maritime connectivity as essential elements of international economic stability.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the growing role of women entrepreneurs in economic development. He said the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance represents an important step towards increasing women’s participation in business leadership and innovation.
Around 200 women business leaders participated in discussions under the alliance, reflecting the growing focus on inclusive economic growth among BRICS nations.
PM Modi said BRICS nations are emerging as innovation hubs capable of providing solutions ranging from grassroots challenges to advanced technological problems.
India’s BRICS chairship has focused on strengthening cooperation among developing countries and creating a platform where governments, industries and startups can collaborate.
The BRICS Business Forum has become an important channel for private-sector engagement, helping shape discussions on trade, investment, technology and sustainable development.
The discussions at the BRICS Business Forum are expected to influence future economic cooperation among member nations. India is aiming to position BRICS as a stronger voice for the Global South while promoting investment, innovation and resilient supply chains.
As emerging economies gain greater influence in global affairs, the biggest challenge ahead will be converting diplomatic discussions into concrete trade partnerships and economic opportunities.
