New Delhi: The national capital has turned into a major diplomatic hub as leaders of BRICS nations gather for the 2026 summit at Bharat Mandapam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting the high-profile meeting, where discussions are expected to focus on global trade, economic cooperation, energy security and the changing balance of world powers.
The summit is taking place at a time when international relations are witnessing major shifts due to conflicts, economic challenges and growing competition among leading nations. The presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other key leaders has increased the significance of the event.
The BRICS summit provides India with an important opportunity to strengthen cooperation among developing economies while maintaining its independent foreign policy approach.
Prime Minister Modi’s engagements with leaders from Russia, China, Iran and other nations are being closely watched globally. India has consistently maintained that dialogue, economic partnerships and strategic autonomy are important for addressing global challenges. The meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin remains a key highlight, as both countries share long-standing ties in areas such as defence, energy and trade. The arrival of several international leaders has led to extensive security arrangements in Delhi. Authorities have implemented traffic restrictions and security measures around important locations, including Bharat Mandapam, to ensure smooth movement during the summit.
As the two-day diplomatic event progresses, the focus will remain on whether BRICS can strengthen its position as a major force in the evolving global order.
Traffic will be diverted on several routes on September 12 from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm. More than 35 roads around Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan will be affected. The traffic police have set up a total of 22 diversion points. Many major roads will not allow ordinary vehicles.

Belarus Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov has arrived in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, being hosted by India. His arrival comes as world leaders and senior representatives of BRICS member countries gather in the national capital for the two-day summit.
China's Global Times tweets, "Chinese President Xi Jinping left Beijing on Saturday for the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi at the invitation of Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, according to Xinhua. Xi's entourage includes Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese foreign minister, Xinhua reported."

As the BRICS Summit 2026 is all set to begin on Saturday, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in India for the Summit, being hosted by New Delhi.
