China on Monday strongly opposed any move to target Mojtaba Khamenei, who has recently been appointed as Iran’s supreme leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.
The statement came after reported threats from the Israel Defense Forces regarding possible action against the new Iranian leader amid escalating tensions in West Asia. Chinese officials said such threats could further destabilise the region and called for restraint from all parties involved.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has temporarily shut down gas-fired crematoriums in the city following restrictions on the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) components such as propane and butane.
Civic officials said the decision was taken after a directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on March 5, asking authorities to prioritise available LPG resources for domestic household consumption across the country. The restrictions come at a time when global energy supplies have been affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor objected to the Foreign Minister's statement in Parliament on the current situation in West Asia. He said that simply reading a statement and not giving members of the House an opportunity to ask questions or express their views is inappropriate.
He said that the main issue is that MPs should be given the opportunity to discuss this topic. According to him, his party also demanded a meaningful debate in Parliament on this important international issue.
Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that the Indian Embassy in Iran remains fully operational and continues to assist Indian nationals in the region
“The Prime Minister has personally spoken with leaders of several Gulf countries and received assurances that the safety and well-being of Indians will remain a top priority for the host governments. We will continue to maintain high-level communication on the matter,” said S. Jaishankar while addressing the Lok Sabha.
For the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Congress party has released a list of MPs who will participate in the debate. The speakers include Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari, Deepender Singh Hooda, and S. Jothimani, among others. These leaders are expected to present the party’s arguments during the discussion on the motion in the Lok Sabha.
SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav, while speaking to the media in Parliament on the Middle East tensions, said that many Indians are stranded in countries of the region. He remarked that journalists who travelled there with Prime Minister Narendra Modi were political journalists but ended up becoming war journalists. Yadav also alleged that the government has completely failed in handling the situation related to the Middle East crisis.
