From Congestion to Faster Trains: New Rail Projects Promise Major Change
New Delhi: The Indian Railways is set for a major infrastructure upgrade after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved a massive Rs 20,800 crore railway expansion plan aimed at transforming India’s rail connectivity. The projects will add nearly 1200 km of new rail capacity across nine states, helping reduce congestion, improve train movement and strengthen passenger as well as freight transportation.
The Indian Railways is set for a major infrastructure upgrade after the approval of multiple railway multitracking projects covering nine states, including several critical railway corridors, which will play an important role in boosting connectivity and supporting economic growth.
The decision is expected to bring significant improvements to some of the country’s busiest railway routes by increasing track capacity, reducing operational delays and allowing smoother movement of passenger and freight trains.
The expansion plan covering nine states and includes several critical railway corridors that will play an important role in boosting connectivity and supporting economic growth.
The CCEA approved five multitracking projects of the Ministry of Railways with an estimated investment of Rs 10,021 crore. These projects will benefit Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana by improving rail capacity and operational efficiency.
According to the government, additional railway tracks will help reduce bottlenecks on busy routes and provide more flexibility in train scheduling. The move is also expected to improve reliability for passengers and strengthen freight movement between industrial and commercial hubs.
In another major decision, the Cabinet also approved three additional multitracking projects worth Rs 10,783 crore. These projects will add around 656 km of new railway network across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
The approved projects include Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth line, Katni-Pendra Road fourth line and Bilaspur-Pendra Road third line. The expansion will cover 14 districts and improve connectivity in regions that are important for both passenger travel and freight transportation.
India’s railway network has been facing increasing pressure due to rising passenger numbers and growing freight demand. The new multitracking projects are aimed at solving several long-standing challenges, including reducing congestion on major railway routes, increasing train handling capacity, improving travel time and operational efficiency, supporting industrial freight movement and creating better connectivity between states. With additional tracks, trains will be able to operate with fewer delays, while railway authorities will get more flexibility in managing schedules.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the approved projects will significantly enhance railway line capacity and improve the efficiency, reliability and flexibility of train operations.
The government has been focusing on railway modernisation through projects such as station redevelopment, high-speed trains, freight corridors and network expansion. The latest approval is being seen as another major step towards creating a more efficient and future-ready railway system.
For passengers, the expansion could mean better train availability, smoother journeys and reduced delays on important routes. For businesses and industries, improved railway infrastructure will help faster movement of raw materials and finished goods, especially in mineral-rich and industrial regions.
The expansion is also expected to strengthen economic activity by improving connectivity between cities, industrial centres and rural areas. Once completed, these projects will significantly increase India’s railway capacity and prepare the network to handle future passenger and freight demand. The expansion is likely to help create a faster, safer and more efficient railway system for millions of Indians.
