ITR Filing Last Date: What happens if you don’t file ITR today? Know the penalties and consequences
Technical problems were being faced on the ITR website. A large number of users lodged complaints on the social media platform X, tagging the government and the Income Tax Department. They said that the portal was not working and they were facing difficulty in submitting the form.
ITR filling date extended
In view of these frequent complaints, the CBDT suddenly decided to extend the last date for filing returns by one day.
According to official data, more than 7.3 crore income tax returns have been filed till September 15, 2025. This is more than last year, when 7.28 crore ITRs were filed till July 31, 2024. At the same time, 6.77 crore returns were filed in 2023-24. This makes it clear that the number of tax filers is increasing every year.
Why filing your Income Tax Return in 2024–25 matters, even with zero tax liability
The decision of the Income Tax Department to extend the deadline is a big relief for those who were not able to file ITR on time due to technical difficulties. This decision not only symbolizes transparency and empathy but also shows that the government is responding quickly to the problems of the public.
If you haven’t filed your return yet, you still have time until September 16—don’t delay!
