Lucknow: Surya Square Society, located on Gokhale Marg in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, has emerged as a model for clean and cost-effective energy use after installing a solar rooftop power plant. The initiative has significantly reduced electricity expenses for residents, drawing attention as an example for other housing societies across the city.

Major Relief From High Electricity Bills

The solar rooftop plant installed at Surya Square Society has brought noticeable financial relief to residents who were earlier burdened with high monthly power bills. The plant was commissioned in September this year, and within just three months, the society has recorded a reduction of nearly ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per month in electricity costs.

Annual Savings of ₹2.5 Lakh

The solar plant has a total installed capacity of 15 kilowatts. With this capacity, the society is expected to save approximately ₹2.5 lakh annually on electricity bills. In addition to long-term savings, the society also received a subsidy of ₹2.7 lakh from the Government of India under the rooftop solar scheme, making the project financially viable and attractive.

UPNEDA Director Reviews Project

UPNEDA Director Indrajeet Singh visited the site along with his team to inspect the solar rooftop installation. During the inspection, he appreciated the initiative taken by the society and highlighted the importance of adopting renewable energy solutions to reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

Government Support for Solar Rooftop Systems

Under the Government of India’s rooftop solar policy, housing societies can receive subsidies of up to ₹18,000 per kilowatt for installations of up to 500 kilowatts. This support can go up to a maximum of ₹90 lakh, encouraging residential societies to shift towards clean energy and reduce electricity expenses.

Plan to Expand Across Cities

Indrajeet Singh said that in the initial phase, residential societies across Lucknow are being identified for solar rooftop installations. In the coming stages, similar solar projects will be implemented in high-rise buildings in other major cities of Uttar Pradesh as part of a broader renewable energy expansion plan.

Officials and Representatives Present

Several officials and representatives were present during the inspection, including society office-bearer Varalika Dubey, UPNEDA officials Ajay Kumar and Narendra Singh, and representatives from RMI, including S.D. Dubey, Upkari Nath, and Kamlesh Singh Yadav.

The success of Surya Square Society’s solar rooftop plant highlights how renewable energy can reduce costs while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
