CJI said no petition had been filed.
New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday said false reports had circulated that the Supreme Court had dismissed a case over alleged excessive use of force by the Delhi Police in the recently held Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar.
CJI said no petition had been filed, clarifying the matter in open court, and adding what came before the Court earlier was a representation.
CJI also took exception to the media having falsely reported that he had refused to list the matter for hearing."Some person mentioned it. Media has falsely reported that I refused to list the matter. It was only a representation. I checked with the registry and not a paper was filed," CJI Surya Kant further said.
Adding to the surprise, the Chief Justice further said for the past two days false reporting claiming that a petition was filed and rejected had circulated, even though reaching the Supreme Court registry no such filing was made.
Meanwhile, protests in Jantar Mantar have intensified even after Sonam Wangchuk broke the hunger strike. Protesters listing strict demands, mainly for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
This comes only days after a lawyer had mentioned before the court that the Delhi Police had exaggeratedly used force on students protesting over NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar.
The lawyer claimed that police had taken "brutal actions" against protesters and sought an urgent hearing. In response, CJI Surya Kant said, "Please don't waste our time and don't waste yours. Your time is more valuable than ours."
When the lawyer offered to show videos of the alleged incidents, the CJI said the court was not interested in viewing them.
The controversy stems from the July 20 CJP protest over the alleged NEET paper leak. The demonstration turned violent after clashes between protesters and police. While protesters accused Delhi Police of using tear gas and batons, police also reported attacks on personnel during the unrest.
CJP later distanced itself from the violence, stating that those involved in vandalism and clashes were not part of its peaceful protest and were attempting to derail the movement.
