CJI Surya Kant urges judicial tech reforms during meeting with Bhutan King

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Thursday met the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, in Thimphu and offered comprehensive support for technical assistance and development of best practices in the digitisation and digitalisation of judicial processes in the Himalayan nation

Delivering a keynote address at the Royal University of Bhutan in Thimphu on the theme “Access to Justice in the 21st Century: Technology, Legal Aid and People-Centred Courts,” the CJI highlighted how digital tools can expand the reach and efficiency of judicial systems.

Justice Kant also said he had conveyed to Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay that the Supreme Court of India, along with various high courts, would be happy to offer internship opportunities to Bhutanese students.

According to a press statement issued by the Supreme Court of India, the Chief Justice later received an audience with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, in Thimphu. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on further strengthening the longstanding relationship between India and Bhutan, and expressed commitment to deepening cooperation through judicial partnerships.

The statement said CJI Kant offered extensive support for technical assistance and the development of best practices in the digitisation and digitalisation of judicial processes in Bhutan.

Chief Justice and Prime Minister Tobgay also focused on emerging challenges such as cybercrime and digital fraud.
