Mumbai: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has threatened to launch another protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar from October 10 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke made the announcement following the party’s demonstration at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, where thousands gathered despite the police denying permission for the protest.

CJP sets October 10 deadline

"If Gyanesh Kumar doesn't resign, cockroaches from across India will march to Delhi & protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10," Dipke said in a post on X.

He said the proposed demonstration would be peaceful and urged citizens who want free and fair elections to join the agitation.

"Ours will be a peaceful andolan. We will walk on the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi. It is up to the Govt & the Delhi Police whether they respect our right to peaceful protest or repeat the brutality we witnessed on July 20. This is a fight to save our democracy. Every citizen who wants free & fair elections must join," he added further.

The announcement marks a move by the CJP to shift its campaign from Mumbai to the national capital, with Jantar Mantar being identified as the venue for its next major demonstration.

‘Jantar Mantar 2.0’ warning

Dipke had earlier announced the possibility of another protest in Delhi while addressing demonstrators at Shivaji Park. He warned that a larger mobilisation would take place if Kumar refused to step down.

"If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, the Gen Z of the entire nation will go to Delhi. There will be Jantar Mantar 2.0," he said, as he gave a call for "Chalo Delhi".

The CJP has made Kumar’s resignation a central demand of its campaign against the Election Commission. The party has also demanded criminal proceedings against him, the freezing of the 2025 voter lists and the abolition of the 2023 law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners.

"Gyanesh Kumar must resign and face criminal proceedings," demanded CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde.

Party cites electoral roll allegations

The CJP has accused the Election Commission of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. Its leaders have alleged that large numbers of voters were deleted or added in different states.

Dipke claimed that 13 crore voters had been deleted over two years and alleged that 40 lakh voters were added to Maharashtra’s electoral rolls ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections. These allegations have not been independently verified.

He also claimed that voter deletions affected constituencies in Delhi, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and linked the alleged changes to election results.

CJP seeks wider mobilisation

The party has presented the proposed October 10 protest as part of a broader campaign over its allegations concerning electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.

"The government is so incompetent that we have to protest again in two months (after the Jantar Mantar protest over the NEET paper leak)," Dipke said.

CJP leader Saurav Das also criticised the Delhi Police over the detention of protesters during the party’s earlier agitation in the capital.

"Delhi Police has again resorted to brutality. We warn Delhi Police to improve or we will improve you," Das said.

The CJP has now announced that it will return to Jantar Mantar in Delhi from October 10, provided Gyanesh Kumar does not resign. The proposed agitation is being positioned by the party as the next phase of its campaign demanding action over what it alleges are irregularities in electoral rolls.
