North India continues to reel under severe cold wave conditions as snowfall blankets the Himalayan region and icy winds sweep across the plains. Delhi-NCR is witnessing biting cold, dense fog during mornings and deteriorating air quality.

New Delhi: The weather remains extremely harsh from North to East India. Snowfall is continuing in the high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. As temperatures drop below freezing, rivers, waterfalls, and water sources have frozen. Icy winds blowing from the mountains have increased the chill in the plains as well. The cold is felt even during the day, and there seems to be little hope of relief at the moment.
Cold winds and fog have increased the troubles of people in the capital Delhi. According to the Meteorological Department, strong cold winds will continue to blow for the next three days, and moderate fog is expected in the morning. On Monday, light clouds reduced the sunshine, further increasing the frost. The sun did shine for a short while in the afternoon, but cold winds made people miserable.

On Monday, Delhi's maximum temperature was recorded at 18.5 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 6.6 degrees. The Ridge recorded a minimum temperature of 8.4 degrees, Aya Nagar 6.6 degrees, Lodhi Road 7.2 degrees, and Palam 7 degrees. Clear skies are expected on Tuesday, although light fog may persist in the morning.
According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi is expected to experience sunny skies on January 6, 7, and 8, but there may be light to moderate fog in the morning. Cold winds will blow at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour on January 6 and 7. Wind speeds will decrease slightly after January 8. Partly cloudy skies are expected between January 9 and 11.

Along with the cold, pollution in Delhi-NCR is also a cause for concern. On Monday, Delhi's AQI was recorded at 244, which falls in the "poor" category. Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram also reported poor air quality, while Faridabad's air quality was relatively better.
The temperature in Gulmarg, Kashmir, dropped to minus 8.8 degrees Celsius. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, recorded a low of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, while heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, including Kedarnath and Badrinath, has disrupted normal life.
