Cold wave intensifies across North India; Mercury dips below zero

North India is witnessing severe cold as snowfall in the Himalayas triggers icy winds across the plains. Kashmir and Himachal record sub-zero temperatures, while dense fog disrupts transport in UP, Punjab and Rajasthan. Rivers and lakes have frozen in hill states.

New Delhi: The severe cold in North India has severely disrupted life. Following snowfall in Kashmir and the Western Himalayan region, cold winds from the mountains have intensified thaws in the plains. Many parts of North India, including the National Capital Region, are engulfed in dense fog. Rail and air services have also been affected. According to the Meteorological Department, the cold and fog may continue for the next four to five days.

Situation grim in Uttarakhand and Himachal

Temperatures have dropped below freezing in high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand, such as Gangotri, Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Pithoragarh. Rivers, streams, and waterfalls have frozen. The Kedarnath shrine is covered in a thick blanket of snow. In Himachal Pradesh, Nako Lake in Kinnaur has completely frozen, where tourists were seen skating. Temperatures in Lahaul-Spiti have dropped below minus 6 degrees. A rain and snowfall alert has been issued for the state.

Temperatures in Kashmir drop to minus 5°C

Cold weather is at its peak in the Kashmir Valley. Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius, and Srinagar minus 3 degrees Celsius. Water sources in many areas, including Shopian, have frozen, causing water shortages for residents. Temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days.

Cold Wave in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab

Cold wave and dense fog have disrupted life in Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Visibility remained near zero in many areas. The cold wave has also intensified in Rajasthan and Punjab. Flights were cancelled due to dense fog in Amritsar. An orange alert has been issued in Punjab for the next two days.

Weather forecast for the next seven days

According to the Meteorological Department, very dense fog will prevail in North India and Central India during the night and morning hours for the next seven days. Cold wave warnings have been issued in several states.
