Uproar in court complex as accused constables appear in cough syrup case
Lucknow: Dismissed constables Alok Singh and Amit Tata, accused in the high-profile Uttar Pradesh cough syrup case, were produced in a Lucknow court today. Arguments over their police remand were heard, though the court has not yet issued an order.
Tension flared in the court premises ahead of the hearing, prompting authorities to deploy additional security.

The situation became so tense that police initially refrained from bringing the accused out of the lockup to prevent any potential attack. After assessing security, the two were later presented before the court.
A heavy contingent of police, including PAC personnel and senior officers, has been stationed in the court complex. Officials said the situation is now under control, and every movement inside the premises is being closely monitored.
Both accused are currently lodged in Lucknow jail and were transported from there for the scheduled appearance.
SIT to Investigate Codeine Syrup Smuggling
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh DGP announced that a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be formed to probe the smuggling of codeine-based cough syrup and the financial dealings of medical firms operating on forged documents.
The SIT, to be headed by an IG-rank officer, will regularly review ongoing investigations and scrutinize financial transactions linked to the case. Officials have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty.
