New Delhi: The national capital experienced severe heatwave conditions on Friday, with the maximum temperature climbing to 41.9°C  over four degrees above normal and slightly higher than the previous day. The highest temperature in the city was recorded at 43.1°C at the Ridge station in north Delhi, underscoring the intensity of the current spell.

Weather stations at the Ridge and Lodhi Road met official heatwave criteria, recording temperatures above 40°C along with significant departures from seasonal averages. Dry and gusty winds, reaching up to 35 km per hour, offered little respite from the oppressive conditions.

Yellow Alert Issued, No Immediate Relief
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Saturday, warning of isolated heatwave conditions across Delhi. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 42°C and 44°C, maintaining the uncomfortable trend.

According to weather experts, there is unlikely to be any major relief in the immediate term. However, a marginal drop in temperatures may occur early next week due to anticipated weather changes in northwest India.

Rainfall May Bring Temporary Cooling
A developing cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan is expected to trigger rainfall activity between April 26 and April 28. This system could bring light showers and thunderstorms to parts of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.

Cloudy skies are forecast for Sunday, followed by possible thundery activity on Monday evening. Light rain is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday, which could provide some temporary cooling.

Heatwave Spreads Across Northern and Central India
The extreme heat is not confined to Delhi. Several states across northern and central India including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are experiencing similar conditions. Temperatures in many regions are already ranging between 40°C and 44°C.

The highest temperature in the country was recorded at 44.5°C in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Forecasts indicate that temperatures may rise further by 2-3°C in the coming days across these regions.

Contrasting Weather in Other Regions
While north and central India struggle with heat, parts of the northeast and southern regions are expected to receive significant rainfall. States such as Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh may witness heavy to very heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
