New Delhi: A tense situation once again erupted in Manipur's Bishnupur district late Wednesday night when an encounter broke out between the Indian Army and suspected Kuki militants. According to police, the incident lasted for about half an hour, creating panic in the area. Security forces immediately responded to control the situation.
According to reports, militants from the Fauljang/Gotol area suddenly opened fire on the Army post at Phougakchao Awang Leikai at around 11:40 pm. The 58th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), also deployed in the area, retaliated in coordination with the Army. Intense exchange of fire ensued, lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Immediately after the incident, the Army, CRPF, state police, and the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) launched a joint search operation. This operation is being conducted not only at the site of the incident but also in the surrounding hilly areas. The security forces' objective is to locate the attackers and restore peace in the area.
Officials have appealed to local residents to maintain peace and avoid any rumors. They stated that spreading misleading information on social media could worsen the situation. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation and may deploy additional forces if necessary.
Manipur has been gripped by ethnic violence for the past several months, with tensions persisting between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Such incidents highlight the law and order challenges in the state. However, security agencies are continuously making efforts to restore peace and normalize the situation.
