Jammu and Kashmir activist Nayeem Farooq raises concerns over rising unemployment among educated youth
Srinagar: The growing struggle of educated youth in Jammu and Kashmir to find employment has once again come into focus after activist Nayeem Farooq raised concerns over the increasing frustration among degree holders facing uncertain career prospects. His remarks have highlighted the challenges of unemployment, limited job opportunities and the growing gap between education and employment in the Union Territory.
Farooq has urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Central government to take immediate steps to address the concerns of young job seekers who are struggling despite completing higher education. He pointed out that thousands of graduates and professionally qualified youth are waiting for employment opportunities while facing uncertainty about their future.
The activist highlighted that obtaining a degree is no longer guaranteeing a stable career for many youngsters in Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that educated youth require concrete employment opportunities, transparent recruitment processes and long-term career solutions instead of repeated assurances.
The unemployment challenge has emerged as one of the biggest concerns for the younger generation in Jammu and Kashmir. Every year, thousands of students complete graduation, postgraduate courses and professional programmes, but many continue to search for suitable jobs due to limited vacancies and intense competition.
Farooq’s remarks reflect the concerns of many young people who believe that academic qualifications are not translating into meaningful employment opportunities. For several graduates, years of education and preparation are followed by prolonged waiting periods for recruitment notifications, examination results and job placements. The issue has also increased demand for stronger employment policies, faster recruitment drives and better opportunities in both government and private sectors.
Farooq has questioned the approach of the National Conference-led Jammu and Kashmir government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah towards tackling youth unemployment. He has sought clarity on the steps being taken to create more jobs and address the concerns of educated youngsters across the Union Territory.
The remarks have brought attention to the need for a comprehensive employment strategy that focuses on job creation, skill development, industrial growth and investment opportunities.
The debate around youth employment has gained importance as young people continue to look for stable careers, financial independence and better economic opportunities within Jammu and Kashmir.
Experts believe that addressing unemployment requires a broader economic approach rather than depending only on government recruitment. Expanding private industries, encouraging entrepreneurship, promoting startups and strengthening skill-based training can help create more employment options for the growing workforce.
Jammu and Kashmir has significant potential in sectors including tourism, information technology, agriculture-based industries, handicrafts, digital services and small businesses. Increased investment and policy support in these areas could provide alternative career opportunities for educated youth.
Creating a stronger private sector ecosystem is also seen as important to reduce pressure on limited government vacancies and provide diverse employment options.
The employment challenge has a direct impact on thousands of young people and their families. Delayed career growth, financial uncertainty and prolonged job searches can affect personal plans and future aspirations among graduates.
Youth organisations and activists have repeatedly demanded transparent recruitment systems, skill development initiatives and policies focused on sustainable employment generation. For many educated youngsters, the issue is not only about getting a job but also about finding a pathway towards stability, growth and a secure future.
