Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sparked a debate with his remarks on the phrase “We Are Gen Z” after reacting to a viral video of a tourist confrontation with security personnel at a checkpoint in Kargil.
The Chief Minister said that the phrase, which is often associated with the younger generation’s identity and voice, should not become a way to show entitlement or exert pressure in everyday situations.
Sharing his reaction to the viral video, Omar Abdullah said, “This ‘we are Gen Z’ has become the new ‘jaante nahin ho mera baap kaun hai’.” He added that misusing the term could damage the goodwill associated with Gen Z.
The controversy began after a video surfaced showing a tourist arguing with security personnel at the Minimarg checkpoint in Dras, Kargil.

In the video, the woman can be heard questioning the delay and saying, “We are Gen Z. We will not tolerate this.” She expressed frustration over being stopped for several hours and questioned why some people were allegedly allowed to move ahead.
The video went viral on social media, with some users supporting the tourist’s demand for accountability, while others debated her choice of words.
The term “Gen Z” has gained significant attention in India’s public discourse in recent months, especially after youth-led protests and discussions around student issues.
Omar Abdullah suggested that the identity of an entire generation should not be reduced to a phrase used during conflicts or disagreements.
He warned that using generational identity as a “threat” in minor disputes could undermine the positive image of Gen Z.
Authorities have stated that temporary road restrictions in the Kargil region are not unusual due to security concerns, weather conditions and road-related issues.
The incident occurred around the time of Kargil Vijay Diwas, when movement restrictions were reportedly imposed on certain routes.
The Chief Minister’s remarks have now triggered a wider discussion on youth identity, accountability, and the changing language of public protests in India.
