New Delhi: This year, the heat wave has begun to show its effects in the country earlier than usual. Temperatures are rising rapidly in many states in early March, and heatwave-like conditions are developing in some areas. Weather experts say this is the earliest recorded heatwave in years, raising the possibility of severe heatwaves in the coming months.

Heatwave in Himachal Pradesh in March

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Himachal Pradesh experienced heatwave conditions ranging from heatwave to severe heatwave conditions on March 6. This is the first such occurrence in the last five years. Typically, the weather in hilly states remains relatively cool or normal in the early days of March, but this time the temperature has suddenly increased.

The Meteorological Department says this situation is unusual and indicates that the effects of heatwaves are increasing faster than before, even in hilly areas.

Major change compared to previous years

This change becomes more pronounced when looking at data from the past few years. In 2025, the first heat wave in Himachal Pradesh was recorded on April 6th. In 2024, the first heat wave in the state occurred on May 19th, approximately 74 days later than this year.

In 2023, no heat wave events were recorded in Himachal Pradesh throughout the year. In 2022, the first heat wave was observed on March 16th. These data clearly indicate that summer in 2026 will begin much earlier than previously.

Temperatures Rise in Coastal States

Weather patterns are rapidly changing not only in the hilly regions but also in coastal states. A heat wave was recorded in the Konkan and Goa regions on February 25th in 2025, marking the earliest such winter heat wave ever recorded.

In 2026, the country's first heat wave was recorded in the same region on March 5th. Heat wave-like conditions were also observed in Himachal Pradesh the very next day, raising concerns among meteorologists.

Sign of Changing Weather Patterns

Experts believe this situation points to climate change and changing weather patterns. While the weather used to be relatively mild in March, temperatures are now rising rapidly in many parts.

According to meteorologists, if this trend continues, severe heat and heatwaves could occur in many parts of the country in April and May. Therefore, people are being advised to take precautions and take care of their health from now on.
