New Delhi: The Indian government, under the leadership of the Ministry of External Affairs, has launched the e-Passport facility across the country, marking a major step forward under the Digital India initiative. Launched as a pilot project in April 2024, the scheme will now be formally implemented nationwide from June 2025. This modern and secure passport will make travel more convenient and secure for Indian citizens.

What Is An E-Passport?

An e-Passport resembles a traditional passport in appearance, but incorporates cutting-edge technology. Its cover contains an RFID chip and antenna, storing the holder's biometric information, such as fingerprints and a digital photo. This technology makes it virtually impossible to counterfeit the passport. A special gold mark below the word 'Passport' on the cover makes it easily identifiable. Furthermore, this passport complies with international ICAO standards, making it recognized worldwide.

Where Can I Get An E-passport?

Initially, this facility was available in a limited number of cities, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Ranchi, and Delhi. Now, under Passport Seva Program 2.0, it has been expanded to all Passport Seva Kendras across the country. While this facility will not be available at all centers simultaneously, citizens can apply at their nearest center. Those holding a regular passport do not need to replace it immediately.

Application Process And Eligibility

Eligibility for an e-passport is the same as for a regular passport. Any Indian citizen can apply with the required documents, such as an identity card, proof of address, and proof of date of birth. Biometric verification at a Passport Seva Kendra will also be mandatory. The application process is as follows:

  • Register/login on the Passport Seva Portal.
  • Fill in the online application form and select the nearest Passport Seva Kendra.
  • Pay the prescribed fee online and book an appointment.
  • Visit the center on the scheduled date with the documents.
  • The e-passport will be issued after verification and biometric capture.

Furthermore, the immigration process at airports will be expedited, especially in countries with automated e-gates. This passport, being compliant with international standards, will be accepted worldwide. Furthermore, its electronic and biometric features will prevent identity theft, enhancing citizen security.

The e-passport is a significant step towards India's digital and secure future, providing citizens with improved service and security through modern technology.
