New Delhi: India and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a bilateral trade pact following a three-day round of discussions. According to the government, the talks concluded on a constructive and forward-looking note, with both sides agreeing to remain engaged to sustain momentum.

The discussions focused on the first phase of an interim trade agreement while also supporting the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement negotiations.

Key Areas of Discussion

Officials from both countries explored a wide range of trade-related issues, including market access, non-tariff measures, and technical barriers. Other areas under discussion included customs procedures, trade facilitation, investment promotion, and digital trade frameworks.

The talks also addressed economic security alignment, reflecting the growing importance of strategic cooperation in global trade relations.

Background of the Agreement

The framework for an interim agreement was finalised earlier this year, reaffirming both countries’ intent to deepen economic ties. The broader negotiations were initially launched by Narendra Modi and Donald Trump in February 2025.

The interim framework aims to create mutually beneficial trade conditions, including tariff adjustments and improved market access for goods and services.

Tariff Developments and Legal Context

Trade discussions have taken place against a complex backdrop of tariff changes and legal developments in the United States. Earlier proposals included reductions in tariffs on Indian goods, though subsequent legal rulings affected the implementation of certain measures.

The evolving policy environment has made continued dialogue essential for both sides to align their trade priorities.

Ongoing Engagement and Next Steps

Indian officials recently visited Washington, DC, for in-person meetings with their US counterparts to finalise details of the interim arrangement and carry forward broader negotiations.

Both sides have emphasised the importance of sustained engagement to ensure steady progress. Officials indicated that future rounds of discussions will aim to resolve outstanding issues and move closer to a comprehensive agreement.

Strengthening Economic Ties

The continued dialogue highlights the strategic importance of India-US economic relations. As negotiations progress, both countries are working to build a framework that supports trade growth, investment opportunities, and long-term cooperation.
