New Delhi: Amid rising global security challenges and evolving battlefield dynamics, the Indian Army is planning to place a major order for the extended-range variant of BrahMos missile, capable of striking targets beyond 800 km.
According to defence officials, the Army is currently equipped with BrahMos cruise missiles with a strike range of over 450 km. However, it is now looking to significantly enhance its offensive capabilities by acquiring the longer-range version.
The proposal is expected to be taken up soon at a high-level meeting of the Ministry of Defence, where formal approval for the procurement could be granted.
The BrahMos missile system has already proven its effectiveness in combat scenarios. During Operation Sindoor last year, Indian armed forces reportedly used the missile extensively to target and neutralize key Pakistan Air Force bases at multiple locations.
Defence experts point out that ongoing conflicts involving Iran, United States, and Israel have underscored the growing importance of long-range precision strike capabilities in modern warfare.
The Indian Army is also planning to ramp up the induction of drones and advanced missile systems in large numbers to meet the demands of next-generation warfare. The move is aimed at strengthening India’s deterrence capability and enhancing operational readiness in a rapidly changing global security environment.
If approved, the induction of the 800 km range BrahMos missiles would mark a significant leap in India’s strategic strike capability.
