New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Iran has sought to reassure Indian nationals about their safety. In a message shared via its embassy in India, Tehran stated that “Indian friends are in safe hands,” attempting to ease concerns as the regional situation grows increasingly volatile.

The outreach comes at a time when fears over the safety of foreign nationals have intensified due to ongoing military and geopolitical developments.

Strategic Strait Under Iran’s Control

Iran has reiterated its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the waterway remains under its “full and decisive control,” rejecting suggestions from Donald Trump about reopening the route under international pressure. This assertion highlights Iran’s firm stance amid the ongoing conflict in the region.

New Plan to Regulate Maritime Traffic

Iran’s Parliament has approved a new framework aimed at regulating traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. According to state media, the plan introduces a toll system for vessels, to be charged in local currency, and outlines rules related to maritime safety, environmental protection, and financial oversight.

The proposal also includes restrictions on vessels from certain countries, particularly those that have imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran.

Restrictions on US and Allied Vessels

Under the new plan, ships linked to the United States and Israel are barred from using the strait. The restrictions may also extend to other nations aligned with US sanctions policies.

Iran has indicated that it may coordinate with Oman to establish a broader legal framework governing the waterway, reinforcing its claims of sovereign authority over the passage.

Conflict Drives Strategic Moves

The developments come as the conflict between Iran and a US-Israel coalition enters its second month. The situation has heightened global concerns over energy supply disruptions and maritime security.

By tightening control over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran appears to be leveraging its strategic position while simultaneously projecting stability to foreign nationals, including Indians residing or working in the region.

Global Implications

Given the strait’s importance to global oil flows, any restrictions or disruptions could have far-reaching economic consequences. Iran’s dual messaging reassurance to civilians and assertiveness in policy reflects the complexity of the current geopolitical environment.
