Tamil Nadu LPG Supply Strengthened as IOCL Increases Commercial Quota
Chennai: Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) Chairman AS Sahney made a major announcement in Chennai, announcing an increase in the commercial LPG quota in Tamil Nadu by 70%. This decision has been implemented with immediate effect. This step was taken after reviewing the fuel situation in the state, in an effort to stabilize the market.
The Chairman assured that the supply of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel in the state remains completely satisfactory. He said that refineries are operating at nearly full capacity and there is no shortage.
LPG Booking Rules: 5 Kg cylinders restricted; Refills available every 9 days
According to IOCL, domestic LPG is being given top priority. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are meeting 100% of the state's daily demand of approximately 5 lakh cylinders. However, waiting periods of 6 to 8 days persist in some areas, and efforts are underway to reduce them.
Considering essential services, hospitals and educational institutions are receiving 100% LPG supply without any cuts. This is being ensured to ensure that essential services are not affected.
Regarding complaints of delays exceeding 20 days in some suburban areas of Chennai, the Chairman stated that the issue has been thoroughly reviewed and the supply problem in the concerned areas will be resolved within the next 24 hours.
The state government and OMCs have taken extensive action to curb hoarding and malpractices. Over 10,000 inspections were conducted in Tamil Nadu, while OMCs conducted over 1,500 raids and took strict action against defaulting distributors.
The Chairman stated that amid global tensions, India is now purchasing crude oil from 41 different countries, up from 25 previously. Sourcing of LPG has also been increased globally. He urged people not to panic buy and stated that there is sufficient stock available in the country.
The government is now focusing on "availability, distribution, and affordability" and is also promoting piped natural gas (PNG), a cheaper and cleaner alternative to LPG.
Although there are challenges in transit on some sea routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, the government has clarified that the country's energy security is fully secure and is being given top priority.
