Puri: The Jagannath Temple in Puri is known worldwide for its grandeur, faith, and religious significance. This temple is not only a center of devotion to Lord Jagannath but also amazes devotees with its many traditions and mysteries.

Among these, the most amazing and mysterious tradition is the flag flying atop the temple, which always flutters against the direction of the wind.

Why Does the Flag Fly Against the Wind?

Generally, flags flutter in the direction of the wind, but at the Jagannath Temple, the flag flies in the opposite direction. The scientific reason for this mystery remains unclear to this day. Local people consider it a sign of the divine power of Lord Jagannath.

It is said that this flag eliminates negative energies and spreads positive energy in the temple and the surrounding environment.

The Tradition of Changing the Flag

The temple flag is changed every day. This act is considered a symbol of devotion and reverence towards God. The old flag is taken down at sunset, and a new triangular flag is hoisted. In winter, this is done around 5 PM, and in summer, around 6 PM. If the flag is not changed on any given day, the temple may remain closed for 18 years.

The Role of the Chunara Sevak or Chola Family

This sacred task is handled by a special family called the Chunara Sevak or Chola family. This family has been performing this responsibility for approximately 800 years. To change the flag, they climb to the 214-foot-high temple spire without any safety equipment. Surprisingly, no member has ever been injured during this process.

The Flag: A Symbol of Faith and Protection

The old flag is believed to absorb negative energy, so hoisting a new flag is a symbol of reverence and devotion to Lord Jagannath. It is not just a piece of cloth but a living testament to the power, protection, and grace of God for the devotees.
