New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation on Monday evening has started the race for his successor.

The ruling BJP-led NDA enjoys a majority among voters, including members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, so it is surprised by Dhankhar's decision to resign. Possible names are likely to be considered in the coming days.

Dhankhar was the Governor of Bengal before assuming the post of Vice President, so it is being speculated that one of the governors or an experienced organizational leader or one of the Union ministers can be chosen for the post of Vice President.

'The party will choose a person who is not controversial'

The BJP has a large group of leaders to choose for this post. Before Dhankhar, former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu was the Vice President. When the party chose him for the key constitutional post in 2017, he was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A BJP leader said, "We are still considering it. But I believe the party will choose someone who is a solid choice and on whom there is no controversy."

Experienced person may be the preferred candidate

He suggested that an experienced person of the party could be the preferred choice. JDU MP and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is also being seen as a possible candidate, as he has been in the post since 2020 and enjoys the confidence of the government.

During Dhankhar's three-year tenure, he often clashed with opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, but his sharp comments on often controversial issues disappointed the government many times.

What next after the resignation of the Vice President?

After Dhankhar's resignation, the biggest question now is who will be the next Vice President of the country? Since the NDA has a majority in Parliament and the Vice President is elected by the MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the chances of victory of the NDA candidate are considered to be high.

Who will take charge of the Rajya Sabha for the time being?

After Dhankhar's resignation under Article 67(A) of the Constitution, the responsibility of Rajya Sabha proceedings has now been handed over to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh. He will play the role of chairman during the Parliament session, although this is a temporary arrangement.
