Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo has visited Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu to review the medical condition of students injured in the tragic flyover bus stand accident. The minister met the injured victims undergoing treatment at the hospital and took detailed updates from doctors regarding their injuries, treatment procedures and recovery status.
The accident occurred on Shakuntala Flyover near Super Speciality Hospital in Jammu when a matador carrying students overturned while they were returning from a Tiranga Rally held at Bagh-e-Bahu. The students were travelling towards Mubarak Mandi when the vehicle met with the accident, leaving 29 students injured.
Following the incident, all injured students were immediately shifted to GMC Jammu, where emergency medical teams initiated treatment under trauma care protocols. Hospital authorities confirmed that 29 patients were admitted after the accident. According to the latest medical assessment, three students are in critical condition, while the remaining 26 injured persons are stable and responding to treatment.
During her visit, Sakina Itoo interacted with the injured students and their families and reviewed the arrangements being made by the hospital administration. She received a briefing from senior medical officials about the nature of injuries, including fractures and other trauma-related complications, and directed doctors to ensure continuous monitoring and specialised healthcare support for all patients.
The Minister instructed the GMC Jammu administration to provide immediate medical intervention, advanced treatment facilities and round-the-clock observation for critically injured victims. She also emphasised that no patient should face any delay in treatment due to administrative, financial or logistical challenges.
Itoo assured the families of the injured students that the Jammu and Kashmir administration was closely monitoring the situation and would provide all possible assistance. She expressed concern over the road accident and conveyed support to the affected families while wishing a speedy and complete recovery for all injured students.
The three students identified as critical in the GMC Jammu patient report include 21-year-old Suhani Devi from Bhawal in Jammu, 20-year-old Arti Devi from Majalta in Udhampur and 27-year-old Seema Devi from Atholi in Kishtwar. Medical teams are closely monitoring their condition and providing necessary treatment.
GMC Jammu Medical Superintendent Dr Virender Trisal informed that the injured students belong to different areas of the Jammu region and regularly come to Jammu for training purposes. He said that most of the injured students were out of danger, although some suffered fractures and required continued medical care.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep concern over the accident and directed officials to ensure that all injured students receive the best possible medical facilities. The administration has instructed concerned departments to coordinate with hospital authorities and provide every required support to the victims and their families.
The visit by the Health Minister comes as the Jammu administration and healthcare authorities continue to monitor the condition of the injured students. Security and transport officials are also expected to examine the circumstances that led to the overturning of the student vehicle on the busy flyover route. Further action will depend on the findings of the official investigation into the accident.
