Tejashwi demands Bihar CM’s resignation over Jamui incident (Img: X)
New Delhi: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the alleged harassment of two minor students in Jamui. He said that the incident proves that "women and girls are not safe anywhere in Bihar".
During a press conference in Patna, the RJD national working president said, "Bihar is being shamed" and alleged that the state had descended into "gundaraaj" under the BJP-led government.
Tejashwi referred to an earlier statement by Choudhary in which the Bihar chief minister had said he was ready to resign if anyone was harmed in Munger.
"Samrat Choudhary himself had earlier said, 'Go to Munger... if anything happens to anyone or someone is harmed, I am ready to resign,'" Tejashwi said, referring to the Jamui incident.
"Today, this video shows that women and girls are not safe anywhere in Bihar whether during the day or at night, at home or on the streets, in colleges or schools, or in hospitals," he said.
"The way crimes against women and girls are increasing in Bihar is extremely shameful. If Samrat Choudhary stands by his words, he should resign if he has the courage," Tejashwi said.
He added, "If he cannot stand by what he said, then there is no point in having such a boastful chief minister."
The RJD leader also accused members of the ruling alliance of trying to defend the incident.
"You all must have seen the video, and the unfortunate part is that those in the ruling alliance are trying to justify it," he said.
The remarks followed the circulation of a video showing a boy and a girl being allegedly harassed by a group of people on a roadside in Jamui. Police subsequently arrested several accused.
The case saw a further development on Tuesday when the alleged main accused, Nandan Yadav, was injured during a police encounter while being taken towards the alleged crime scene. He was subsequently arrested, according to police reports.
Tejashwi described the incident as another indication of what he characterised as the collapse of law and order in Bihar, repeating his allegation of "gundaraaj".
