Wild elephants kill six people in Hazaribagh
Hazaribagh: At least six people were trampled to death when a herd of wild elephants attacked Gondwar village in the Churchu block of Hazaribagh late on Thursday night.
The deceased have been identified as Suraj Ram (60), Madhu Devi (22), her one-and-a-half-year-old son, and her approximately four-year-old daughter. Suman Devi (20), and Dhaneshwar Ram (60), also died.
A four-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries during treatment in the hospital.
According to media reports, a herd of about five elephants wreaked havoc in Nanhutongri Tola, Gondwar village. The death of six people has cast a pall of gloom over the entire village.
Villagers have demanded that the administration find a permanent solution to the elephant problem so that no one else has to lose their lives.
Upon learning of the incident, administration and forest department officials arrived in the village and assessed the damage. According to media reports, elephants have also wreaked havoc in Charkha, Pakhal, and Budku Toli villages.
BJP MP from Hazaribagh, Manish Jaiswal, expressed grief over the incident. He said that according to one estimate, about 10 to 15 people have lost their lives in the area every year.
This figure would be around 37 across the state. The MP urged the forest department to make appropriate arrangements to prevent such incidents from happening again.
What did the villagers say?
Rohit Ram, a resident of Gondwar village, said that the incident occurred at midnight. A child was walking on the road and he also died. A total of six people were killed by elephants. Four of them belonged to one family, while the remaining two belonged to another family.
