Nainital: Justice Alok Kumar Verma has tendered his resignation from the office of Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, according to an official notification issued by the Government of India on May 27, 2026.
The resignation was submitted under proviso (a) to clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, which allows a High Court judge to resign from office by writing to the President.

As per the notification, Justice Verma’s resignation has been accepted with effect from April 30, 2026. The decision carries retrospective effect, even though the official notification was issued later in May.

Justice Verma was originally scheduled to retire on August 15, 2026. His resignation, therefore, comes several months before the completion of his tenure at the Uttarakhand High Court.
The Ministry of Law and Justice issued the notification confirming the resignation. The government stated that the process was carried out in accordance with constitutional provisions governing the appointment and resignation of High Court judges.
No specific reason for the resignation was mentioned in the official communication.
Justice Alok Kumar Verma served as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court and was part of several judicial proceedings during his tenure. His early resignation creates a vacancy in the High Court bench, which will now await further appointment procedures as per constitutional norms.
