New Judicial Era Begins in J&K as Justice Bhati Takes Charge in Srinagar (Img: Dynamite News)
Srinagar: Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati on Wednesday took oath as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in Srinagar. The appointment has drawn attention as the region’s top judicial institution begins a new phase under his leadership.
The oath ceremony was held at the Shalimar Auditorium of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir, where Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath of office to Justice Bhati.
The event comes at a crucial time for the J&K and Ladakh High Court, which continues to deal with important constitutional matters, administrative issues and cases related to governance across two Union Territories.
The official process of appointment was completed after the Registrar General of the High Court read out the warrant of appointment issued by the President of India.
Following the announcement, Justice Bhati took the oath of office and later signed the oath roll along with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The appointment warrant was formally handed over to the newly appointed Chief Justice, marking his official assumption of charge.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of several senior political, judicial and administrative officials from Jammu & Kashmir. Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, cabinet ministers, High Court judges, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat attended the event. The presence of senior officials highlighted the importance of the appointment in the administrative and judicial framework of the Union Territories.
Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati was earlier serving as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court before being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Union Government officially notified his appointment on September 5, 2026. He succeeds Justice Sanjeev Kumar, who had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court since June 2.
Justice Bhati brings years of judicial experience from the Rajasthan High Court to his new role, where he will oversee the functioning of courts across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh holds a special position in India’s judicial system as it serves two strategically important Union Territories.
