Justice Surya Kant will be the 53rd CJI following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai on 24 November, upon attaining the age of 65.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has recemmonded to the Union Law Ministry the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor, marking the initiation of the process to appoint the next Chief Justice of India.
Justice Surya Kant will be the 53rd CJI following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai on 24 November, upon attaining the age of 65.
According to the established procedure, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice had recently written to CJI BR Gavai, seeking his recommendation for the next CJI.
The senior-most judge after CJI Gavai Justice Surya Kant was born on 10 February 1962 in a middle-class family.
Justice Kant graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981 followed by his Bachelor degree in Law in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
