Justice Surya Kant’s selection as the 53rd Chief Justice of India reflects the continuation of a balanced and experienced leadership in the judiciary. He is expected to make significant contributions to making the justice system more transparent.
Justice Surya Kant will be the 53rd CJI following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai on 24 November, upon attaining the age of 65.
The Union Law Minister will, at an appropriate time, seek the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India for the appointment of his successor. Traditionally, this letter is sent a month before the current Chief Justice retires upon attaining the age of 65.
