Karur: Actor turned politician Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court’s October 3 order constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the tragic stampede during a rally in Karur on September 27. The incident claimed 41 lives and injured over 100 people.

TVK Questions SIT’s Impartiality

The TVK petition, filed through Secretary Aadhav Arjuna, contends that the SIT, composed solely of Tamil Nadu police officers, lacks impartiality and public confidence. The party points out that the High Court itself had questioned the independence of the state police but still directed the same force to investigate the tragedy.

The petition also challenges the court’s critical remarks accusing TVK and Vijay of leaving the scene without showing remorse. TVK is now seeking an independent investigation, preferably under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.

Supreme Court to Hear Plea

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the plea on October 10, along with another petition by BJP leader Uma Anandan, seeking a CBI probe into the incident. The case has quickly become a political flashpoint, raising questions about investigative neutrality and accountability in political events.

TVK Chief Reaches Out to Victims’ Families

Following the tragedy, TVK chief Vijay contacted the families of the victims via video calls, offering condolences and pledging support. The party is also collecting necessary documents from families to provide financial assistance, as promised earlier.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a one-member inquiry panel, headed by Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the stampede. The panel is tasked with examining causes, event permissions, safety compliance, and recommending measures to prevent future incidents. The report is expected within three months.

Political Reactions and Accountability

The stampede has sparked intense political debate in Tamil Nadu, with the ruling DMK government stating it is prepared to take action against Vijay if needed. Minister S Muthusamy emphasized the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation and ensuring responsibility is fixed for the incident.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the petitions, the tragedy continues to dominate Tamil Nadu’s political discourse, highlighting concerns over event management, political responsibility, and independent investigation mechanisms.
