Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set to witness voting in two Assembly bypolls on October 6, with Madurantakam and Dharapuram emerging as closely watched contests in the state’s rapidly changing political landscape.

Although the elections are limited to two constituencies, their political significance extends far beyond their geographical boundaries. Chief Minister Vijay has personally invested substantial political capital in the campaign, turning the contests into an important early test of the popularity, organisational strength and electoral momentum of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The TVK-led government is seeking to retain both seats after two AIADMK MLAs resigned from the Assembly and subsequently joined Vijay’s party. The former AIADMK legislators have now been renominated by TVK, adding an additional layer of political drama to the contests.

Why These Two Seats Matter To The TVK Government

The two bypolls were necessitated after AIADMK MLAs K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned as legislators and later joined the ruling TVK.

Kumaravel had won from Madurantakam, while Sathyabama represented Dharapuram. TVK has chosen both former legislators to contest the bypolls, effectively making the elections a test of whether voters will endorse their political switch and Vijay’s leadership.

For the AIADMK, the contests carry an equally significant message. The party is seeking to reclaim seats that were won by its candidates in the 2026 Assembly election and demonstrate that its traditional support base remains intact.

The DMK, meanwhile, is attempting to use the bypolls to challenge the ruling party and consolidate its position as the principal Opposition force.

Vijay Turns Campaign Into Prestige Battle

Vijay has taken the two bypolls seriously, personally campaigning across the constituencies in the run-up to polling.

His intensive campaign has attracted attention because the Chief Minister has devoted several days to contests involving only two Assembly seats. Roadshows, public interactions and local outreach have placed Vijay directly at the centre of the campaign.

His campaign has also included efforts to connect with voters beyond conventional political rallies. The Chief Minister has interacted with residents during his campaign trail, including stopping at a local tea shop and undertaking a tractor ride and roadshow through villages.

The level of personal involvement underlines the importance the TVK leadership attaches to winning both constituencies.

TVK’s Majority Arithmetic Adds To The Stakes

The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in the 2026 election, falling short of the 118-seat mark required for a simple majority on its own.

The government is therefore supported by alliance partners, including the Congress, Left parties and the Indian Union Muslim League, among others. The relatively narrow legislative cushion has made the two bypolls particularly important for the ruling formation.

Winning both seats would strengthen the government’s numerical position while simultaneously reinforcing the political narrative surrounding Vijay’s leadership.

A defeat, on the other hand, would provide the Opposition with an opportunity to question the durability of the TVK’s electoral momentum only months after the Assembly election.

DMK And AIADMK Mount Strong Challenge

The contest has evolved into a three-way political battle involving TVK, DMK and AIADMK.

The DMK, led by M K Stalin, is seeking to exploit the bypolls to challenge the ruling party’s momentum and test its own organisational machinery after the Assembly election.

The AIADMK has an even more direct objective: defeating the two former members who left the party and joined TVK.

The party has fielded candidates with the aim of reclaiming the constituencies, making the contests a direct referendum of sorts on the defections.

The political messaging has consequently become increasingly sharp, with allegations and counter-allegations adding to the intensity of the campaign.

Election-Day Battle Goes Beyond Two Constituencies

The significance of the October 6 vote lies in what the results could signal for Tamil Nadu politics.

For TVK, victories would strengthen Vijay’s claim that the party’s Assembly election success has translated into sustained voter support. For the AIADMK, reclaiming either seat would demonstrate that the party continues to possess a meaningful electoral base despite losing two sitting legislators to the ruling formation.

The DMK, meanwhile, has an opportunity to demonstrate that it can challenge the new ruling party while rebuilding its own electoral position.

The contests are also being watched for signs of how voters respond to political defections, particularly when former representatives return to the electorate under a different party banner.

Puducherry Adds Another Electoral Contest

Alongside the two Tamil Nadu bypolls, voters in Puducherry will also cast ballots on October 6 in the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency.

The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister N Rangasamy resigned as its MLA and retained the Mangalam constituency after winning both seats in the 2026 Assembly election.

The Thattanchavady contest has turned into an 11-cornered battle involving the ruling AINRC-backed formation and a fragmented Opposition.

While Rangasamy is expected to retain political influence in the constituency, the unusually large field has made the contest another closely watched electoral battle in the region.

Allegations Add To Political Tension

The campaign has also been accompanied by allegations concerning electoral conduct.

Opposition and Left parties have raised allegations regarding the distribution of cash to voters, with specific claims directed at the TVK-led ruling formation. The allegations have been denied by the party.

The AIADMK has separately raised concerns over campaign permissions and alleged unequal treatment during the election period.

Such allegations have added another layer of tension to an already closely fought contest, putting the spotlight on the Election Commission and local administration to ensure a level playing field.

Polling will take place on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9. The results will determine more than the occupants of two Assembly seats.

They will offer an early indication of whether Vijay’s TVK can sustain the momentum that carried it to power, whether the AIADMK can reclaim ground after the defection of two former MLAs, and whether the DMK can emerge as the principal challenger in the new political configuration.

For Vijay, however, the stakes are especially personal. After turning the bypolls into a high-profile campaign exercise, a clean sweep would strengthen his political standing and reinforce the perception that TVK’s rise was not merely a one-election phenomenon. The October 6 vote could therefore become the first significant electoral verdict on the durability of the Vijay-led political experiment.
