Seven people have died and five others were injured after a massive avalanche struck near Zoji La in Ladakh, burying several vehicles and blocking the Srinagar–Leh highway, triggering a large-scale rescue effort.

Ladakh: A massive avalanche struck near Zoji La Pass in Ladakh on Friday afternoon, leaving at least seven people dead and five others injured, according to officials.
The avalanche hit the stretch between Zero Point and Minimarg, an area known for heavy snowfall and frequent disruptions. Several passenger vehicles were caught in the sudden snow slide, with many getting buried under debris.

Authorities said around 15 vehicles were either partially or completely buried under snow following multiple avalanches in the region. Rescue teams are still working to reach some of the trapped vehicles, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.
Medical officials confirmed that most of the injured have been treated and discharged, while one person remains under care.
The strategic Srinagar-Leh highway has been blocked due to the avalanche, disrupting connectivity between Ladakh and Kashmir.
A large-scale rescue operation has been launched involving the Army, police, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration. Efforts are focused on clearing debris, rescuing survivors and restoring traffic movement.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed the fatalities and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, stating that all necessary assistance is being provided to the injured.
Meanwhile, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena said he is personally monitoring the situation. He has directed district officials in Kargil to reach the site immediately and ensure swift rescue and relief operations.

Officials noted that heavy snowfall and difficult terrain are slowing down rescue operations. The region remains prone to avalanches during this time of the year, making operations risky and complex.
