New Delhi: An India-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, Jag Vikram, has successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first such passage since the temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
The vessel moved through the critical shipping corridor between April 10 and 11, 2026, and is now in the Gulf of Oman, heading eastwards.
Owned by Mumbai-based Great Eastern Shipping Company, Jag Vikram is a mid-sized LPG carrier with a deadweight capacity exceeding 26,000 tonnes. It is currently transporting around 20,000 tonnes of LPG, underscoring the gradual resumption of energy shipments through the region.
LPG Booking Rules: 5 Kg cylinders restricted; Refills available every 9 days
The tanker is the ninth Indian vessel to exit the Persian Gulf since early March, when tensions in West Asia escalated. At the peak of the crisis, at least 28 India-flagged ships were caught in the region, with many stranded due to safety concerns.
While several vessels have now navigated to safer waters, around 15 Indian ships remain in the Gulf, awaiting clearance to transit. Hundreds of international vessels, including tankers and gas carriers, are also still positioned in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital energy corridors. A significant share of global oil, gas, and LPG supplies passes through this narrow waterway connecting the Gulf to international markets. Its temporary disruption had widespread implications for energy-importing nations.
India, heavily reliant on imports, sources nearly 88% of its crude oil and a large portion of its gas and LPG from Gulf nations. During the disruption, authorities reduced LPG supplies to commercial users and prioritised domestic consumption.
With shipping gradually resuming, supply levels are stabilising. Natural gas allocation to key sectors like fertilisers and city gas distribution has also improved, though it has not yet returned fully to pre-crisis levels.
