Guru Nanak Jayanti Significance and History

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guruparva, is one of the most sacred and joyous festivals in Sikhism. This day not only celebrates Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday, but also is an opportunity to embrace his life philosophy, such as speaking the truth, treating everyone equally, and engaging in selfless service. Preparations for this festival begin two days in advance. Gurudwaras organize Akhand Paath, which continues for 48 hours. During this time, the sacred words of the Guru Granth Sahib resonate in every direction. A Nagar Kirtan is held a day before the festival. Sikh devotees decorate tableaux and sing hymns and kirtans to spread the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

On the morning of Gurupurab, a sacred procession called Prabhat Pheri is held, during which devotees offer prayers, sing kirtans, and become immersed in devotion. Langar Seva is held throughout the day, where people from all castes, classes, and religions sit together and share a meal. This is the festival's central message.

The Importance of Langar

Langar is one of the most sacred and humanitarian traditions of Sikhism. It was started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 1500s. At a time when society was divided by caste, religion, and class, Guru Nanak Dev Ji initiated the tradition of langar, teaching society the true lesson of equality and brotherhood. In this tradition, everyone, regardless of caste or religion, sits together on the floor and eats a meal. Even today, langar is served daily to thousands of people in Gurudwaras across the world, free of charge. There is no discrimination here; everyone receives equal love and respect.
