Mumbai: The issue of farmer suicides in Maharashtra has always been in the headlines. In such a situation, once again a shocking disclosure was made in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Friday.
State Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Patil said that a total of 479 farmers committed suicide in March and April 2025. These figures have come from various parts of the state including Marathwada and Vidarbha.
In the case, the minister said in a written reply during the Question Hour that 250 farmer suicide cases were registered in March, out of which 102 cases were found eligible for government assistance, but till now the assistance amount has been distributed in only 77 cases.
At the same time, 62 cases were considered ineligible and the investigation of 86 cases is still going on.
Shocking figures in April too
The minister, in his written reply, referring to the figures of the month of April, said that 229 farmers committed suicide in April, out of which 74 cases were found eligible for assistance, but so far compensation has been given to the families in only 33 cases.
How much compensation is given?
It is worth noting that according to a government policy of 24 January 2006, if a farmer commits suicide due to reasons like crop failure, inability to repay loan or increase in debt, then his family is given financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh.
In the matter, Minister Makarand Patil said that however, the government does not have any proposal for any increase in this compensation amount at present. In such a situation, after this disclosure made by the minister, concern was raised in the assembly about the condition of the farmers. Also, the opposition demanded the government to take more strong steps for the farmers.
