New Delhi: India is facing emerging concerns over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies as multiple tankers carrying fuel remain stranded near the Strait of Hormuz. The disruption comes amid escalating tensions involving the United States and Iran, affecting movement through one of the world’s most critical energy routes.

Scale of Disruption Significant

According to available data, around 3 lakh metric tonnes of LPG is currently stuck in the region. In household terms, this volume translates to roughly 2.1 crore domestic LPG cylinders, highlighting the potential impact on millions of consumers if delays persist.

Shipping ministry data indicates that at least 22 Indian-flagged vessels are currently stranded in the area. These include six LPG carriers, along with crude oil tankers, container ships and other cargo vessels. The LPG carriers account for the entire volume of stranded gas.

Limited Relief as Some Ships Reach India

Despite the disruption, a few vessels have successfully navigated the route. LPG carriers Shivalik and Nanda Devi crossed the Strait earlier this month, delivering nearly 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG to Indian ports.

In addition, the crude oil tanker Jag Laadki, carrying over 80,000 metric tonnes of oil from the United Arab Emirates, recently reached Mundra port in Gujarat, offering some relief to supply chains.

Why Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital link between the Persian Gulf and global markets, handling a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in this narrow passage has immediate ripple effects on global energy supply and pricing.

India’s Supply Situation

India relies heavily on imports to meet its LPG demand, making the current situation particularly sensitive. While buffer stocks and recent arrivals have helped maintain supply stability for now, prolonged disruption could tighten availability, increase import costs and impact domestic prices.

Authorities and industry players are closely monitoring developments as geopolitical tensions continue to influence the flow of energy supplies.
