Monsoon Session may see a showdown over the Delimitation Bill (Img: IANS)
New Delhi: The monsoon session is expected to witness intense political contest between the government and the opposition over 131st( constitutional amendment) Bill on Delimitation linked with women's reservation with expansion of Lok Sabha. Top political sources indicate that the government is still in a dilemma and weighing all options before bringing this bill again in the present session.
Constitutional experts believe that the government is unlikely to press for a Constitutional Amendment on Delimitation Bill, without first ensuring that it has the necessary support. the government was defeated on this bill during last budget session.
Sources made it clear that 129th(amendment) Bill, seeking simultaneous elections across the country and 130th ( amendment) Bill for removal of PM and CMs and Union Ministers from their posts if they arrested and detained for 30 days; will not be taking up in this session as they are still with Joint Select Committee.
Other that the Constitutional Amendment Bills, government today indicated a tentative list of Seven Bills,including five new ones to be taken up. Government is fully prepared to pass Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment (FCRA) Bill, 2026, which was to be passed in the last session itself but deferred due to Kerala assembly polls.The Bill allow the government to take over assets created using foreign donations if NGOs lose permission to collect such funds.
Five new bills include Prevention of insults to National Honour amendment Bill( Vande Maratam); Registration of Births and Deaths amendment Bill, which makes the delayed registration more stringent; The Income Tax Amendment Bill ;Supreme Court (number of judges) amendment Bill and the Fifth new Bill is the MSME Development amendment Bill.
The Supreme Court( number of judges) amendment bill 2026, seeks to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37. The Bill on MSME seeks to address the changing MSME landscape and enhance the ease of doing business and bring trust based regulations in the MSME ecosystem.
